Sailing Adventures on Santa Catalina Island

Catalina Island is much more than Avalon and the Isthmus. Though there is plenty to enjoy where the restaurants and tourists are, we aim to introduce you to the rest of the sailors’ paradise, just across the San Pedro channel from Los Angeles and Orange County.

We have three different ways to go, depending on your objectives:

  • Slow Cruise - fun exploration, perfect for gaining experience

  • Anchoring at Catalina - learn single hook, bow and stern, and short-handed techniques, and never worry again about getting a mooring

  • Catalina Night Crossing and Circumnavigation - more advanced techniques, and opportunity for Bareboat and SLC certification

I just returned from a sailing trip with Marc to Catalina over the weekend and had a wonderful time. I have taken a few sailing classes through OCC but this was my first time doing an overnight trip on a sailboat. I was a little bit nervous about it, but Marc and his first mate Eric made all of us very comfortable. Although most of us were strangers at the start, we returned to the dock in Newport as friends. The meals were fantastic and the whole crew learned a lot, while having a great time. Sailing through a pod of over 100 playful dolphins was an experience I’ll never forget! I would definitely recommend sailing with Marc if you want to learn to sail, or just relax on board a sailboat!

Catalina Slow Cruise

For aspiring passage makers and just for fun, this is an easy going trip to the island that’s also great for first timers. Over three days we’ll show you Avalon and have dinner ashore, visit the Isthmus, and anchor out for a night at one of the beautiful coves on the north side.

Day 1 we aim for Avalon, pick up a mooring, and go ashore to see the sights and have dinner. Day 2 we sail down to Two Harbors at the Isthmus for a quick trip ashore, and then find a great cove to anchor in for the night. Dinner is prepared on board, and you’ll enjoy a beautiful evening at anchor. Day 3 we head back to Long beach, working on navigation and sail trim. Itinerary is subject to change depending on conditions.

This is a great opportunity to learn with someone who’s been to where you want to go, and knows what you want to know (see this blog). More experienced hands are welcome, and everyone will gain some experience in these areas…

  • Learn about provisioning for the trip

  • Learn about and participate in the planning the passage

  • Make navigational and sail trim decisions along the way

  • Get a mooring assignment from the Harbor Patrol and venture ashore in the dinghy

  • Get anchoring experience

  • Have dinner under the stars in a beautiful cove, on our own.

This is an introductory cruise, not a certification cruise with formal instruction. You will learn a ton just by being there, and if you want to get involved in anchoring, navigating and running the boat, that’ll be perfect. Menu planning and provisioning (except for dinner ashore) is included.

Anchoring At Catalina Cruise

This is the classic 3-day cruise led by Marc Hughston, author of Anchoring At Catalina. Learn how to enjoy the freedom of the experienced cruiser, and anchor out in the best coves without having to worry about whether moorings are available. Focuses on bow and stern anchoring techniques, and includes the guidebook, Anchoring At Catalina.

First day, we make the crossing and focus on passage planning, sail trim, and navigation. We anchor for the night with a great dinner prepared on board with your help. The second day, we anchor in just about every good cove on the north side of the island, working our way down toward Avalon. We usually stop for a swim if it’s warm enough, and finish with appetizers and another gourmet meal on board. Third day, we head for home, working on passage planning, sail trim, and navigation.

This cruise is perfect for the sailor who has experience, but really wants to gain competency with anchoring. Want to learn short handed anchoring with your significant other? This is the cruise to build those skills. Our mission here is to build your confidence and competence in anchoring, especially with bow and stern anchors - that’s a skill set that will serve you around the world.

You’ll learn how to anchor bow and stern right here, at Cabrillo Beach, and many other excellent anchorages as well

Catalina Night Crossing and Circumnavigation

(Bareboat Charter Master and SLC certification are available on this cruise)

Make your first night crossing and circumnavigation with a seasoned pro. This is the trip where you really learn by doing. It’s also an opportunity, for those who are qualified, to get the training they need and practical assessment for Bareboat Charter Master and the SLC Mediterranean Sailing License. Earn your Night Sailing Navigation Endorsement, and depending on conditions, you may be able to get your Heavy Weather and Spinnaker Endorsement during the cruise.

Day 1 begins with a night time departure from Long Beach. Though we have GPS and an electronic chart plotter as backup, we’ll put traditional dead-reckoning skills into practice, making landfall at either Little Harbor or Catalina Harbor on the backside on Day 2. Day 3 has us navigating and sailing around the West End with a stop in Two Harbors at the Isthmus, moving on for skill training, and selecting a cove to anchor in for the night. Day 4 has us heading back for Long Beach, focusing on remaining skill training and assessment items. All meals are prepared on board.
