If you want to experience a voyage from Santa Barbara Harbor to Newport Beach, via San Miguel Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Santa Barbara Island or Catalina, this is the trip. Be advised, this ain't no picnic. We'll have some 04:00 departures in complete darkness.
If conditions allow, we'll visit one of the windiest places on the West Coast - San Miguel. Often, the winds get to 30 kts plus on this passage. This is a place few visit, and it it well worth it for the experience, and your resume.
Many students opt for the US Sailing Bareboat Certification on this cruise, and those are the folks that create the passage plan, the meal plan, do the provisioning, cook the meals (all on board), lead the watch rotation, swab the decks, clean up the heads, take out the trash and, in effect, try to make me (the instructor) irrelevant.
I've been doing this for a long time, and I think it's great. Where else will you learn how to conduct a multi-day voyage in challenging conditions, and handle it all (even leading the passage to San Miguel) with a safety net?
Note: Santana Sailing / NauticEd students, we can verify your practical competency for Bareboat Charter Master on this cruise as well, if you are able. Please contact me well in advance if this is in your plan.
Contact me for specific questions about the voyage and life on board. Contact OCC for pricing and availability, and prerequisites. These trips usually sell out 4-6 months in advance, so book now if you are interested.
